I can't help remembering the beginning story in "The Alchemist". It is the story of the Greek Narcis who looked in the lake to see his face and eventually drowned (there was a love plot there I don't remember very well). The naiads were mourning N's death and asked the lake: "How can you go on like this? Don't you remember how beautiful Narcis was?" And the lake replied: "Narcis was beautiful? I never knew that. I could see MY beauty in his eyes and this is why I will miss him."
Could it be that love is seeing yourself through the other's eyes?
